Rookie Officer Jones left for work, making her usual stop at a convenience store for a Coke and a pack of cigarettes. She later parked her 1994 silver Nissan truck in lot A, space 2 at Indigo Ferry Landing.

Jones and Partner Keith Cain left Southport for their  6:00 PM to 6:00 AM night shift On the way over, Jones assisted a ferry employee as he asked three passengers to give up the beer they were illegally drinking on the ferry.

Upon arrival, the two officers proceeded to the station where they inspected and readied their vehicles and equipment and began their shift. It was uneventful until they got a call from the hostess at one of the restaurants. They went to investigate a problem concerning a golf cart. Then they returned to the office. At approximately 11:00 PM, Officer Jones left the office and took her police vehicle to go for a ride.

Around 11:30 PM Davina called her former boy friend from a payphone at the marina, talking to him about them remaining friends. It was a quick call, lasting only about a minute.

Jones stopped a golf cart at 11:45 PM and got them onto the correct side of the road. She did not exit her vehicle, but rolled down her window to talk to them.

At 11:48 PM she reported over her mike: "Show me out with three."

Jones: 10-4(Affirmative): Show me out with three.
           Stand by, stand by please.
Jones: (spoke with mike keyed): "There ain't no reason to have a gun here on Bald Head Island, okay? You want to put down the gun, come on, do me the favor and put down the gun ...
(squelch at a high pitch frequency) ... Come on UGU..."
This is the last communication to come from Davina before her body is found by Officer Cain minutes later.
